Saturday 4th May

Feeling much better today. Went for a long walk into the village, to see some of the people that work for Ripple, on the forestry and fish projects, and bought some basic provisions (bananas and eggs).

The Government and the Chief of the area have done a deal for the sugar cane company to have all the land behind the village, where every family has a plot to grow their own food. The families will get no compensation and will have no way of feeding their families. This is a disaster for forest conservation as they will have no choice but to go further up the mountain, to clear the land of trees to grow crops. The land there is poor and washed away easily in the rainy season, so it's unsuitable for farming. The locals have formed a committee to try to get an injunction from the court. Let's hope they succeed.

These are the allotments that they will be evicted from.

The allotments

The hills they'll be forced up are so far away, and all of those trees will be stripped away if this goes ahead.

The distant hills

Here is Faston, a local villager, under his carefully cultivated passion fruit vines. The passion fruit are not quite ready to pick.

Not quite ready to eat!

I have finished my homework (the headrest) so I hope it works.
